• A Nigerian woman was sentenced to ten years in prison in Federal Court recently after she used the internet to defraud people in what attorneys are referring to as a “romance scam.”
• These scams took a lot of different forms but many again played on people’s desires for a large inheritance.
• The woman made over 1.3 million dollars scamming people over the internet.
• One famous scam was the so-called inheritance tax scam where again foreign funds were locked up until a large tax bill was paid.
• Others were a bit more creative for example where she lifted over $200k from someone to pay an import fine on jewels.
• These are all common ways that con-artists are preying on the weak in and around Palm Beach County.
• If a loved one is falling victim to these kind of scams their financials need to be controlled by someone.
