New York Woman Busted in $300,000 Inheritance Scam
Remember that Nigerian Prince who needed a few hundred bucks to unfreeze his assets who asked for your help? Apparently he has a distant relative in New York after reports surfaced of a similar scam in New York regarding a supposed million dollar inheritance. Has someone asked you for money to gain access to their funds held in probate or another inheritance related account? Are you sure its not just a scam?
- When a person dies in Florida their property is collected (most of it) and put into their estate, the estate then pays off any taxes and costs associated with probate. This includes inheritance taxes, estate taxes (both federal in states with state taxes state taxes) and attorney fees.
- Palm Beach Probate Lawyers know that scams relating to inheritances are all to common, but these types of scams rarely get to the probate lawyers as it is perpetrated on friends and family of the con artist.
New York Woman cons friends out of over $300,000 in inheritance related scam:
- A Brooklyn woman forged various bank accounts to make it appear that she hadinherited millions then concocted a story that the account would not be accessible until she had covered the administrative fees- this is the making of a con, can you see it?
- This alleged scammer then used this ruse to get ten different people to donate amounts ranging from $3,000 to $105,000 she then signed over “I.O.U.s” (these are formally called a promissory note). All the while she promised insane returns on these loans. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
- When the victims asked for there money back what do you think happened? She told them she needed even more money!
- How did she convince all the scammers according to the New York District Attorney she used their shared Carribean Heritage to trick these people into believing her story!
Dont fall victim to these types of scams. If a bank had millions in store why wouldnt they just debit the account what they were owed rather than absorbing more administrative costs to collect the fees? Just does not make any sense. Dont let your elderly relatives in Delray Beach, Pompano, Boynton Beach, Jupiter, Boca Raton or anywhere fall victim to these ploys either!
